To minimize the risk to our patients, MIT Medical has changed its in-person operations to prioritize evaluation and testing of COVID-19. But we know that even in a world health emergency, other medical concerns don’t disappear. That’s why MIT Medical is offering multiple telehealth options to ensure that your access to healthcare continues uninterrupted.
What is telehealth?
Telehealth programs use secure audio and video communication to provide clinical and behavioral services to patients without an in-person visit. Telehealth is often used for follow-up visits, management of chronic conditions, medication management, specialist consultation, and behavioral health. During medical emergencies like COVID-19, telemedicine is a vital tool to keep patients connected to healthcare providers without risking viral spread.
Conducting video visits with your MIT Medical provider via HealthELife
You will need to set up a HealthELife account to access video visits. Once your account is set up, you can use the appointment request feature in HealthELife to sign up for a telemedicine visit. Keep in mind that many, but not all MIT Medical providers have the ability to conduct virtual visits, and not all concerns are appropriate for a telehealth consultation. If you request a visit with a provider who cannot conduct telehealth visits, we will contact you to offer alternatives.
Once you have requested your appointment, we will email you a document containing instructions on how to log into your appointment. Video visits can be accessed on your mobile device using the HealthELife app for Apple iOS or Google Android. They can also be accessed on a computer with an internet connection and a webcam by going to mitmedical.iqhealth.com. Tech support (see below) is available to ensure that you can access your visit.
Please note: the MIT Dental service does not participate in HealthELife services.
Video visits with mental health providers at MIT Medical
At this time, you cannot request Student Mental Health and Counseling appointments or send messages to Mental Health providers through HealthELife. To reach your Student Mental Health and Counseling provider, call 617-253-2916. As with other providers at MIT Medical, not all mental health clinicians are available for telehealth visits. It is also important to note that if you are physically located outside the state of Massachusetts, ongoing telehealth treatment with a Massachusetts-licensed mental health provider may not be available to you at this time.
Another telehealth option: Well Connection from Blue Cross Blue Shield MA
To provide maximum flexibility to our community members, students and employees with MIT-sponsored health plans have access to an additional telehealth service. Blue Shield of Massachusetts is offering cost-free access to their service Well Connection. Well Connection provides HIPAA-compliant video visits with licensed medical and behavioral health practitioners on your computer or mobile device. Providers on Well Connection can offer advice, diagnose symptoms, and send prescriptions to your local pharmacy.
Interpreter and language services for telehealth visits.
Information about ASL and foreign language interpreter services will be available in the coming weeks.
