Full-time students are automatically enrolled in, and billed for, the MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan, so if you want the plan, you don’t need to do anything. However, as long as you are not an exchange student and already have comparable insurance from a U.S.-based insurer, you can waive this coverage. For some students, a parent’s or spouse’s health insurance plan provides comparable coverage. You may also be able to purchase comprehensive insurance through a state or federal health insurance marketplace.
Waiver deadlines are August 15 for the academic year (September 1-August 31) and January 20 for the spring term.
NOTE: Less-than-full-time students are not automatically enrolled in the MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan, but you are eligible for this coverage if you want it. Call the MIT Health Plans Office at 617-253-4371 for more information.
