State law allows students to opt out of this coverage—or “waive”—if they have comparable coverage through another U.S.-based health insurance plan. This means that the student must be covered by a health plan that offers the same type of benefits as the Extended Plan, and that allows the student to use those benefits to get care in the Boston area. To find out if your student is eligible to waive, take our online quiz.
To waive Extended Plan coverage, your student must complete the online waiver form by the deadline (August 31 for the fall semester; January 31 for the spring semester). Note that a parent cannot complete the form for a student, because it can be accessed only with an MIT certificate.
