Eye Care
An annual vision exam at MIT Medical’s Eye Service is covered in full for students with the MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan; however, the plan does not cover eye exams outside of MIT Medical. Students who have waived Extended Plan coverage may schedule eye exams with the Eye Service but will be billed. Your outside insurance may cover these services at MIT Medical, but if not, you could be responsible for the full charge.
Neither student health plan covers the purchase of prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses, however MIT students receive discounts on eyewear purchases at MIT Optical, MIT Medical’s optical store, conveniently located in the basement of the Stratton Student Center. Eyeglass adjustments and minor repairs at MIT Optical are free of charge.
Students are covered in full for the treatment of eye injuries whether or not they have waived Extended Plan coverage.
Dental Care
MIT Medical does not offer a dental insurance plan for students. Neither student health plan covers routine dental care for students aged 19 and older. (For information on coverage through age 18, see below.) The MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan covers certain medically necessary oral surgeries. Check with Member Services for more information.
MIT Medical’s Dental Service accepts Delta Dental insurance (subject to deductibles and copayments). For other dental insurance plans, we can provide a standard claim form to fill out and submit for reimbursement with your insurance company. MIT students can pay at the time of service with a check or credit card or have charges placed on their student account.
Undergraduate students who do not have dental insurance through a parent or spouse may be able to obtain coverage through the Massachusetts Health Connector. Discounted services are provided to MIT students who do not have dental insurance. Contact the Dental Service at 617-253-1501 for more information.
Dental coverage for graduate students

Dental coverage for students under 19 years of age
As part of Affordable Care Act requirements, the Student Extended Insurance Plan provides some basic dental coverage for students younger than 19. See our Schedule of Dental Benefits for more information, or contact Member Services.
