Mental health care outside of MIT Medical

Sometimes a clinician at MIT Medical’s Student Mental Health and Counseling Services may refer a student to services outside of MIT. Or some students may prefer to receive services from an outside clinician. While services at MIT Medical are provided at no additional charge to the student, services outside of MIT Medical will be covered by the student’s supplemental insurance plan—either the MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan or his or her other comprehensive plan.

With most insurance plans, including the MIT Student Extended Plan, the out-of-pocket cost will be lower if your student sees a clinician who participates in the plan’s provider network. For example, with the Extended Plan, the first 12 visits in a calendar year to an in-network provider are covered in full; after that, there will be a $25 copay for each visit.

If your student has waived Extended Plan coverage and is staying on your health insurance plan, find out how your insurance will work in Cambridge. How many visits are covered, and how easy is it to find a conveniently located and appropriate provider?

A student with the Extended Plan doesn’t need a referral to see an outside clinician, but having a referral on file allows that student to fill prescriptions from that clinician at the MIT Pharmacy for a lower copay than he or she would have at an outside pharmacy. Students who are already seeing an outside clinician or have a specific outside clinician in mind, can just call Student Mental Health and Counseling Services at 617-253-2916, and ask to speak with someone about getting a referral for their outside treatment.
