Fill your prescriptions

If you take any prescription drugs on a regular basis, you’ll need to know how to get refills while you’re here at school.

If you have the Extended Plan...

The MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan includes prescription drug coverage. With this coverage , you’ll have the lowest prescription copays at the MIT Pharmacy.

However, the MIT Pharmacy only fills prescriptions written by MIT Medical providers. We cannot refill prescriptions from your provider at home. So, if you have just arrived at MIT and need a prescription refilled immediately, the fastest way to get your medication will be to have the prescription transferred from home to a local pharmacy.

After you choose a primary care provider (PCP), you can make an appointment to discuss your prescriptions and any other healthcare needs you may have. Your PCP can write new prescriptions for the medications you need. That way, the prescriptions will be covered by your MIT insurance, and you can pick it up on campus. There is no copay or other charge for appointments with your PCP at MIT Medical.

If you have a current prescription for psychopharmaceuticals, a clinician from MIT’s Mental Health and Counseling Service can meet with you and write prescriptions for the medications you need. To make an initial appointment, call the Service at 617-253-2916 .

If you’ve waived...

The MIT Pharmacy only accepts MIT insurance. If you have waived the MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan, you can still fill prescriptions from MIT Medical providers at the MIT Pharmacy, but you’ll probably have to pay full price and submit a claim for reimbursement to your outside insurance company. You’ll probably find it more convenient to fill prescriptions at a local pharmacy that accepts your insurance company’s drug plan.

Local pharmacies

Cambridge has many local pharmacies that can fill prescriptions. You can call the pharmacy to find out if they accept your health insurance plan and find out when they are open.
