Eye Care
An annual vision exam at MIT Medical’s Eye Service is covered in full for students as part of tuition.
MIT SHIP does not cover the purchase of prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses, however, MIT students receive discounts on eyewear purchases at MIT Optical, MIT Medical’s optical store, located on the first floor of MIT Medical (Building E23). Eyeglass adjustments and minor repairs at MIT Optical are free of charge.
Students are covered in full for the treatment of eye injuries whether or not they have waived MIT SHIP coverage.
Dental Care
MIT Medical does not offer a dental insurance plan for students. MIT SHIP does not cover routine dental care for students aged 19 and older. (For information on coverage through age 18, see below.) MIT SHIP does cover certain medically necessary oral surgeries. Check with Patient Billing Services for more information.
MIT Medical’s Dental Service accepts Delta Dental insurance (subject to deductibles and copayments). For other dental insurance plans, we can provide a standard claim form to fill out and submit for reimbursement with your insurance company. MIT students can pay at the time of service with a check or credit card or have charges placed on their student account.
Undergraduate students who do not have dental insurance through a parent may be able to obtain coverage through the Massachusetts Health Connector.
Discounted services are also provided to MIT students who do not have dental insurance. Contact the Dental Service at 617-253-1501 for more information.
Dental coverage for graduate students
Graduate students and their families are eligible for the MIT Graduate Student Dental Plan. See our Dental FAQ for more information.
Dental coverage for students under 19 years of age
As part of Affordable Care Act requirements, MIT SHIP provides some basic dental coverage for students younger than 19. See our Summary of Benefits and Coverage for more information, or contact Patient Billing Services.
