About the waiver
The MIT Student Medical Plan, included with tuition, provides access to most services at MIT Medical with no copay and no additional charge. But Massachusetts state law requires that you also have additional, comprehensive insurance coverage. To meet these state requirements, MIT automatically enrolls you in, and bills you for, the MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan. State law allows you to opt out of this coverage—or “waive”—if you have comparable coverage through another U.S.-based health insurance plan. To have “comparable coverage,” your health plan must offer the same type of benefits as the Extended Plan, and you must be able to use those benefits to get care in the Boston area.
