Using Your Insurance

Getting care on campus

The MIT Student Medical Plan, included with tuition, provides access to most services at MIT Medical with no copay and no additional charge. This includes:

Prescriptions and services outside of MIT Medical are not covered by the MIT Student Medical Plan. For coverage outside MIT Medical, including prescriptions, you will need the MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan or, if you’ve waived the Extended Plan, your other comprehensive insurance plan.

How to use the MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan

When you’re on campus
The MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan integrates seamlessly with the MIT Student Medical Plan. When you need care outside of MIT Medical—anything from physical therapy to MRIs to hospital stays—MIT Medical clinicians can help you find the right specialists and make appointments, and we can answer your questions about what is covered.

The Extended Plan’s prescription coverage also allows you to fill prescriptions conveniently at the MIT Pharmacy, or any retail pharmacy in the Express Scripts network.

When you’re off campus
If you’re studying remotely, the MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan gives you access to the nationwide network of BCBS providers. It covers a wide range of services, including routine care and visits with specialists, telehealth (in the US only)*, hospitalization and ambulance transportation, outpatient mental health services, prescriptions, and more.

* Because some states have laws restricting the provision of telehealth services across state lines, MIT Medical clinicians can only schedule telehealth appointments with patients who are physically located in Massachusetts at the time of the appointment.

If you’re in the Greater Boston area, and you’ve waived the Extended Plan
Even if you’ve waived the MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan, you still have coverage through the MIT Student Medical Plan, meaning that you can use most services at MIT Medical with no copay and no additional charge.
