OPTION 1: Enroll in the MIT Affiliate Medical Plan ONLY…
If you buy the MIT Affiliate Medical Plan, you will be able to use most services at MIT Medical with no copay and no additional charge. However, the plan does not cover emergency room visits, hospitalization, surgery, or other services outside of MIT Medical. If you do not buy the MIT Affiliate Extended Insurance Plan with the MIT Affiliate Medical Plan, you must have other health insurance that meets federal requirements.
You may also buy the MIT AFFILIATE MEDICAL PLAN for your family. For more information, see Family Members.
OPTION 2: Enroll in the MIT Affiliate Medical Plan and the MIT Affiliate Extended Insurance Plan…
If you buy both plans, you will be able to use most services at MIT Medical with no copay and no additional charge. You will also be able to use some MIT Medical services that the MIT Affiliate Medical Plan alone does not cover, such as eye exams and HPV vaccinations. You will also have coverage for hospitalization, surgery, and other services outside of MIT Medical. MIT Medical can help you arrange and coordinate any outside care you need.
- Call the MIT Health Plans Office at 617-253-4371 to schedule an orientation session.
- Come to your scheduled orientation session at the MIT Health Plans Office (E23-308). At the orientation session, we will answer your questions about how health insurance works. We will tell you about MIT’s health plans for affiliates and help you learn how the plans will work for you.
- After the orientation session, you will complete and sign an enrollment form. You must enroll for a period of at least three months. You will also choose a payment schedule for your insurance. You can make your first payment when you enroll or at any time within the first 30 days. After that, you can pay every three months, every six months, or every 12 months.
That’s all! As soon as you make the first payment, you are covered. You can begin using the services at MIT Medical immediately, and you can choose a primary care provider (PCP). About three weeks after you enroll, you will receive a Blue Cross Blue Shield card in the mail. You will have to show this card when you get medical care or fill prescriptions outside of MIT Medical. Be sure to carry this card with you at all times.
You may also buy MIT HEALTH insurance coverage for your family. For more information, see Family Members.
OPTION 3: If you don't want to purchase the MIT Affiliate Health Plan…
If you already have comprehensive health insurance that meets federal requirements (including visa requirements, if applicable), you do not have to buy the MIT Affiliate Health Plan. Please note that MIT Medical does not accept most outside insurance plans. If you are not covered by an MIT health plan, you will not be able to use most services at MIT Medical.
NOTE: You cannot buy MIT insurance for your family members if you do not have MIT coverage yourself.
