OPTOMETRIC TECHNICIAN, MIT Medical  

Reports To: Nurse Practice Supervisor

Position Overview: 

The Optometric Technician assists the Optometrists and Ophthalmologists (Eye Care Providers) in obtaining clinical information from patients; performs diagnostic tests; assists with contact lens fittings and conducts patient training in insertion, removal, wearing schedule, disinfection and proper care of contact lenses. This role performs other tasks as specified by the ECP in providing complete and comprehensive eye care. The Optometric Technician maintains the contact lens inventory, re -ordering as supplies are required. This position is responsible for ordering routine office equipment and supplies as necessary. When needed, the Optometric Technician assists the patient services representative with administrative duties

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:   

  • Places a primary focus on patient comfort, explains all testing so as to reduce anxiety.
  • When indicated performs the following procedures: chief complaint, visual acuity, pupil testing, EOM movements confrontation fields, color vision testing, stereo, Amsler Grid, slit lamp, tonometry, lensometry, keratometry, pachymetry, and documents findings on appropriate forms.
  • Operates the visual field analyzer, OCT, HRT3, fundus camera and provides appropriate documentation.
  • Assists secretaries with patient triage, appointment scheduling, and other clerical tasks as necessary.
  • Maintains contact lens inventory and related supplies and solutions.
  • Receives shipments, checks order accuracy and condition of goods, unpacks, shelves, or otherwise stores items correctly.
  • Resolves delivery discrepancies by partnering with appropriate administrative and clinical staff.
  • Ensures accuracy of requisition forms; adjusts inventory tracking system appropriately.
  • Ensures correct levels of inventory maintained on hand.
  • Takes steps to reduce little used stock and elimination of obsolete items.
  •  Ensures proper quantity levels are maintained, lens and other items are restocked at the appropriate intervals, expired items are not available for accidental disbursement, and all are stored as per manufacturer, regulatory, and/or policy requirements.
  • All other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Required Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Two years’ experience in eye care
  • Deals with confidential information and/or issues using discretion and judgment
  • Requires eye/hand coordination and manual dexterity
  • Requires prolonged standing and walking
  • Good communication, interpersonal, and diplomacy skills
  • Professional manner with solid customer service skills
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Proficiency in basic computer functions
  • Ability to work as part of a team and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Deals with confidential information and/or issues using discretion and judgment
  • Performs work accurately and thoroughly

Must be able to work Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. No weekends.
