Nurse Practitioner, Urgent Care

Position Overview: 

The Urgent Care Nurse Practitioner provides direct patient care to MIT Medical patients. This role assesses patient health status through interview and physical exam and synthesizes this clinical information to formulate health status, diagnosis, development of plan of care and treatment, implementation of treatment plan, and evaluation of follow-up strategies according to age-specific plans of care. Said work is done in accordance with MIT Medical Policies as well as State and Federal rules, regulations, and standard of care. The Nurse Practitioner provides health education, supportive counseling, and clinical outreach to the MIT community in collaboration with other individuals or services at MIT Medical as well as across the MIT Community.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities*

  • Functions independently to perform age-appropriate history and physical exam of patients. 
  • Assesses health status through interview, physical exam, and review of the medical record as evidenced by documentation in the medical record and presentation.
  • Demonstrates assessment skills for common episodic complaints frequently seen, such as common infections, musculoskeletal problems, chest pain of cardiac and non-cardiac origin, headache, abdominal pain, dermatologic problems, mental health concerns, ophthalmologic disorders, respiratory disorders, GI problems, GU problems, GYN complaints, and minor surgical problems. Also includes appropriate treatment of anaphylaxis, chemical, and radiation exposure. 
  • Triages emergencies and coordinates transfer of patients to emergency room when needed.
  • Performs phlebotomy, initiates IVs, and performs minor surgical procedures, including suturing minor lacerations, simple I&D of cysts and abscesses, etc.
  • Synthesizes clinical information from the interview, physical exam, appropriate laboratory data, and medical record to differentiate between normal and abnormal findings as documented in the medical record and case presentation. 
  • Effectively uses clinical judgment and consultation with physicians to identify health problems and treatment strategies as documented in the medical record and case presentation. 
  • Formulates and directs appropriate treatment, including prescription writing, which emphasizes a comprehensive approach to the needs of the individual and the family. · Orders and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to patient’s age-specific needs. 
  • Prescribes appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities 
  • Implements interventions to support the patient to regain or maintain physiologic stability; assists with the provision of procedural care in accordance with facility, state, and federal regulations. 
  • Responsible for monitoring patient compliance with opioid medication through periodic toxicity screening utilizing Mass Prescription Awareness Tool, communication with referring provider, and opioid risk assessment questionnaires. Conducts telephone encounters and written correspondence for follow-up, patient education and information, and triage as necessary as evidenced by documentation in the medical record. 
  • Documents legibly and in a timely manner, the subjective and the objective data, and the clinical impressions and plan of care formulated during the patient encounter.
  • Monitors the effectiveness of interventions. 
  • All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Education and Experience:

  • Masters Degree in Nursing and Graduate of an accredited Family Nurse Practitioner Program.
  • Current Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Certification.
  • Current provider card in Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
  • MA Board authorization to practice as an Advanced Practice Nurse.
  • Valid prescriptive authority from both the MA DPH-DCP and Federal DEA.
  • Written Communications: Ability to summarize and communicate in English moderately complex information in varied written formats to internal and external customers.
  • Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and communicate complex verbal information in English to staff, patients, families and external customers.
  • Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of concepts, practices and policies with the ability to use them in complex varied situations.
  • Team Work: Ability to collaborate with PA’s, Medical Assistants, Physicians and administrative staff to ensure the patient receives optimal clinical care. Must attend monthly Clinical meeting.
  • Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service and staff training to meet customer service standards and expectations. Resolves service issues in a timely and respectful manner. Responds to patient phone calls within 24 hours (received during normal business hours).
