Reports to: Associate Chief Nursing
Position Overview:
The Nurse Manager is a Registered Nurse responsible for managing and providing clinical resources for RNs, Medical Assistants, and Eye Technicians in the Medical Specialties Unit (Dermatology, OB/GYN, Eye, Occupational Health, and Allergy). The manager provides oversight on the implementation of operational, patient care, and other associated clinical activities. The Nurse Manager reports to the Associate Chief Nursing Officer and will collaborate on practice improvements that ensure the nursing process is operationalized by utilizing Standards of Care/Standards of Practice. The Nurse Manager will review and recommend methodologies and process improvements for nursing practices.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs management duties in collaboration with the Associate Chief of Nursing Officer to achieve and maintain quality services and positive employee relations.
- Oversee unit management within established policies, procedures, and supply budgets in the absence of the Associate Chief of Nursing Officer.
- Supervises (hires, evaluates, and disciplines) Registered Nurses, Medical Assistants, and Eye technician staff according to established personnel policies, and procedures.
- Manage the staffing schedules and posts in accordance with nursing department policies, and procedures.
- Acquires, maintains, and utilizes knowledge of personnel policies and procedures, initiates timely and appropriate management interventions, inclusive of coaching, counseling, and progressive discipline, and works collaboratively with Human Resources as needed.
- Promotes and facilitates staff's professional development to ensure the unit provides quality nursing care.
- Works collaboratively with the Associate Chief Nurse Officer/clinical instructor to establish, facilitate and coordinate a preceptor program.
- Manage and recommend quality improvement activities to evaluate and meet Standards of Care/Practice.
- Participates in assigned committees and communicates timely information to the Associate Chief of Nursing Officer and staff.
- Ensure compliance with appropriate statutes and regulations (i.e., DPH, Joint Commission, OSHA, etc.).
- Coordinates clinical activities and investigates incidents or concerns to ensure safe and efficient functioning of the unit based on patient needs.
- Promotes and maintains effective professional relationships with all healthcare team members to ensure that patient care issues are addressed in a timely manner.
- Acts as a clinical role model to staff through the provision of direct patient care in accordance with appropriate department policies and procedures.
- Utilizes MIT Medical’s Values as the basis for decision-making.
- Follows established MIT Medical infection control and safety procedures.
- Performs other duties as needed.
Minimum Required Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required
- Registered Nurse licensed to practice in Massachusetts
- Minimum 5 years of experience working as an RN in health care
- Experience as a nurse manager preferred
- Strategic thinker with sound clinical judgment, practical problem-solving skills, and excellent organizational, computer, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to set priorities, coordinate multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.
- Detail oriented excellent oral and written communication, strong diplomacy skills
- Tech-savvy and resourceful; Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
- Self-directed and proactive with a strong ability to make independent decisions and work with little to no direction while simultaneously keeping management informed and escalating issues appropriately
- Proficient in data management and reporting
- Desire to work as part of an interdisciplinary team to improve patient’s health and wellness
- Ability to sensitively engage diverse groups of patients regarding their participation in their healthcare
- Must exercise a high degree of professional judgment within the scope of licensure
