Mark Harnett studies the electrical properties of neurons and how they enable neural circuits to perform the computations underlying brain functions such as learning and memory. “My lab’s ultimate goal is to understand how the cortex works,” he says.

Elizabeth Ng ’78 is CEO of Ocean Biomedical, which is working on potential therapies for several types of cancer. “If a treatment keeps patients alive long enough for the next innovation to come out, maybe you can call it a cure,” she says.

After studying human biodynamics, “I became interested in applying my engineering expertise to women’s health issues,” postdoc Shaniel Bowen says. She now studies women's sexual anatomy and health while also working to interest young women in STEM careers.
