The MIT Student Health Insurance Plan (MIT SHIP) covers MIT students and other eligible MIT-affiliated members of the community.
MIT SHIP is offered through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA). MIT SHIP is a preferred provider organization (PPO) plan with a broad national network. It is a comprehensive health insurance plan that meets state and federal health insurance requirements, as well as requirements for J-1 visa holders.
MIT SHIP covers medical services at locations all over the country, but when you are in the Cambridge area, you’ll use MIT SHIP primarily for prescriptions and necessary medical services that are not available at MIT Health. This might include MRIs or other specialized tests, visits to specialists, physical therapy, off-campus mental health services, ER visits, ambulance transport, surgery, or hospitalization.
